WHRA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING

Wednesday December 22nd 2004
PRESENT:
Jim Brophy, Bill Boughner, John MacDonald, Michele Gaboury, Lesley Henshaw, Carole Gilbert (N.B. It appears that the email that Jim sent out regarding this meeting was not received)

ANNUAL MEETING
The minutes of the Annual General Meeting will be sent to Peter Markiewicz for posting on the website and will be distributed via email. Bill Boughner agreed to deliver minutes to those members who do not have email addresses.

Three new Directors were elected: Eugene Stasiak, Joe Bandolini and Louise McMenamin.

The expenses for the annual meeting were very low. Because the Oakville Club had overbooked, they gave us complementary coffee and cookies and did not charge for the room. Feedback from the meeting indicated that the format was good and the smaller room was big enough for the approximately 70 people who attended.

MEMBERSHIP
We need to appoint street captains, make a new flyer and pursue an active membership drive in the early part of 2005. It is important to recruit new members and to communicate with the membership on a regular basis.

Gene Stasiak has agreed to replace Hossam Shiaty in keeping the computerized membership records and lists of email addresses.

John Murray has agreed to replace Peter Markiewicz as a Street Captain and he will also represent us at the Town’s Parking Committee meetings.

WHRA LOGO
Lesley, Michele and John agreed to meet to finalize the logo before the membership drive.

2005 DEVELOPMENT PROPOSALS
There was some discussion about the new developments that are taking place in the vicinity of Kerr Street and Lakeshore Road. It was agreed that we are amenable to development in the area, provided that it is acceptable to the neighbourhood. The current height limit is four stories.

POTENTIAL DONATION TO WHRA
One of the part-owners of Sharkeys approached Jim about making a donation of approximately $2,000 to help defray costs incurred in opposing the development proposal. The WHRA did not incur any costs and will not use membership funds for such purposes. While we appreciate the offer we do not need the funds.

COALITION FOR RESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT
We have learned that a group of 40 people are forming a foundation to influence municipal elections in Oakville. It was agreed that we have to keep the WHRA removed from politics and it is important that we remain neutral. However, WHRA could organize All Candidates meetings, in the same way that we did at last year’s AGM, as a service to the neighbourhood.

SHARKEYS AND THE OMB
The hearing ended two weeks ago and the OMB hopes to bring down a decision by the end of January. The decision will be for either 14 stories or 6 stories; there will be no compromise.

PARKS COMMITTEE 2005 FOCUS
In addition to the ongoing work, e.g. clean up, butterfly garden, parks maintenance, etc., John indicated that the Parks Committee will focus on getting trees planted along Lakeshore Road from Wilson to Maurice Drive, and having streetlights installed similar to those along Lakeshore Road and north side of Robinson Street in the downtown core. It was suggested that perhaps the developers could be part of these initiatives.

Lesley has written to the Town regarding bicycle paths and they are interested so we might want to pursue this issue as roads are re-surfaced.

At the AGM one of our members suggested having a yard sale, with the proceeds going to WHRA or a charity.

We need to seek enforcement of the poop and stoop by-law.

THANKS
The Executive wishes to thank Hossam Shiaty, who recently resigned as Treasurer, and agreed to give him a small token of our appreciation.

The Executive thanked John and April MacDonald for all their efforts on behalf of the Parks Committee and the WHRA. For next year the joint Chair of the Parks Committee will be April MacDonald, Lynn Brophy and Peri Taylor.

OTHER BUSINESS
The neighbours in the vicinity of Tim Hortons have indicated that the drive-in speaker phone is a problem, as are idling cars. Bill will take on this issue to the extent that he can.
